For most non-immigrant visa types(B,H,L,J,F), Canadian don't need the visa stamp. Bring the document, apply the status at POE directly if you are Canadian.

Whether you are allowed in or not depends on the inspector though.
I did like u said last year.no problem to get F1 status for Canadian citizen,just show your I-20 at POE,and then u will get I94.
