Jabber's English Note---ain't

本文发表在 rolia.net 枫下论坛We Chinese English speakers are usually strict with grammar. So, most of us can make at least 600 in TOFEL tests. In the reality, however, it's another story. We have to understand and learn a lot of ungrammatical things. Especially, if we like to listen to country and pop music, we have to tame our ears with the abbreviation "ain't". Otherwise, we’ll have no ears at all.

Take Shania Twain as an example. She is so sweet and her songs are so amazing. One of her recent hits is simply entitled " I'm Gonna Getcha Good". Right now, her hottest hit is "Forever And For Always." Its most touching theme comes with the words that read "And there ain't no way I'm lettin' you go now…”. Printed on the paper, most of us have no difficulties to understand these words. If you have never see the lyrics, how much can you understand?

I did a test on myself. I tried to listen to Celine Dion’s song “Have You Ever Been In Love?”. I listened 10 times consecutively, but I still could not figure out the following sentences in the lyrics: “Some place that you ain't leavin', Somewhere you gonna stay.” I got these words from the lyrics.com.更多精彩文章及讨论,请光临枫下论坛 rolia.net

    • Even for a Chinese song, I can only figure out the lyrics by about 70%, needless to say an English one.
    • Fine, you want me to give you everything the modern people say. Ain't is just an old word for me.
      ain't=are not
      gimme=give me
      wanna=want to
      I don't want chocolate no more.=I don't want chocolate anymore.
      I don't know nothing.=I don't know anything.

      LOTs more lots more. O didn't u know 75% of the people in U.S. say "alot", the right way is a lot. A easy way to practice is listening to rap (slim shady), buy a mp3.
      • ain't = be not, so it could be isn't, aren't . Let us say. "Today is wendy, ain't it"
        • True,尤其黑人的口语中,I,you, he,it ...都可以连用ain't. 另外有趣的是,口语中的双重否定一般都是用于强调否定,而不是国内权威语法书中说的=肯定. 赫赫,国内的英语教育太脱离现代口语了,交际性太差,光抠语法.
          • 国内英语教育的目的,不是培养你出国,是培养你的阅读能力..俺觉得还是客观点好,动辄全盘否定于事无补.
            • 我没有完全否定的意思.不过语言教育,首先应该是出于交际功能吧?国内教育的弱点,不用我多说,那么多学了10来年英语,T600多分的开不了口,就是最好证据.
              反而看到很多老外学外语的,不到一年,就可以和人简单会话,说明教育的出发点对于效果还是很重要的.
              我觉得近年来,国内的高中英语教学对听说能力的重视还是让人很欣慰的.吃过亏的人就希望后来人有更高的起点.
