Jabber's English Note---013

Thank you, thank you, ....

Do you say thank you properly?

This is an issue that most of newly-arrived female Chinese immigrants need to pay attention to.

In North America, most men are eager to be gentlemen----they are used to opening the door for ladies. In such a situation, you have to say "thank you". According to my observation, most Chinese ladies need some time to get used to this kind of formalities. Again, I did not say all of the Chinese ladies. If you happen to fall into the category of those well-educated, please enjoy yourself but don't dispute with me.

    • Thank you. (Though I am not a lady.) A question: I always heard Canadian people say "thank you" in a rising tone while I used to say it in a falling tone. Then how do you think of it?
      • As far as I know, front-desk ladies like to say "thank you" in a rising tone.
    • Things are different for younger generation now. I saw a little girl of 6 said thank you to her mother for trivial things here in Shanghai --- it looks like a very natural response for her to whatever others do for her.
