approved in Richmond Hill, while our present sewer capacity will only allow
for 7,000 units. Assuming all goes well, this situation will not change until
two new trunk sewers are built. However, it is not going well. These new
trunks were supposed to be completed by 2007, but they have now been
delayed by 22 months. During excavation and dewatering, it was found
that wells in north Markham were drying up as surface water was being lost,
to replenish the belowground dewatering. The problem is being studied, but
a solution is not coming any time soon, as even the experts are saying, they
don’t know what to do, because this problem has not been encountered
before.
I will keep you posted on the developments of this situation. Right now the
Town has issued a freeze on all new residential subdivisions and will not
issue any new permits until this crisis is resolved. If the capacity of the
sanitary sewer system is breached there could be overflows and discharges.
The most vulnerable location on the whole system is the Yonge trunk south
