Speak Up

本文发表在 rolia.net 枫下论坛I work in a field that is a totally new field to me. I had no experiences. I never worked in that field before. And like all new immigrants, my English is not good. When I first came here, I was scared all day. I was afraid of making mistakes and scared of speaking with colleagues. If possible, I wish I could stay in my office all the time.

One afternoon, that was after I came here one week, one colleague called me to refer to my boss a prospective client with one million’s investment. She told me her name first, but I didn’t hear clearly, so I asked her telephone number. I thought I could find her name on the staff telephone number list. But the terrible thing was the number she gave me was the shared number of downstairs. So I had no clue of who I was talking with just now. I murmured to my boss what happened. She ordered me directly, “ go downstairs and ask who called you just now.” You can imagine what an awkward scene happened next.

It seemed to me that it was the end of the world. When you entered a new field, you knew nothing about what you were doing. Much worse was that your English was not good, you couldn’t speak freely and clearly about what you were thinking about. So you had no confidence at all. The more you were scared, the more mistakes you would make.

Several days after, my boss came into the office and closed the door; she told me some words that I would remember all my life. She said to me, “ you have no experiences and your English is not perfect, that is not a big deal. The most important thing is you should be confident. Shoulders back, speak up! Your English is not good, so just speak louder to make everyone hear clearly, that is it!”

That clicked me. From that time on, I spoke louder and with confidence. And now, every time when people learned that I had been in Canada for only a short while, they would make a fuss over my English. My English is not amazing now; the difference is now I speak louder and clearer.

Speak louder, that is how my boss teach me to speak English.更多精彩文章及讨论,请光临枫下论坛 rolia.net

    • bullshit.... Speak louder won't help. Speak more often might.
      • Shoulders back, deep breath ... She has a point!
        • Speak loud will be very inappropriate in Canada. People usually speak very quietly in most atomsphere.
    • Doesn't make sense to me; You're just lucky enough to have a nicer boss.
