    • mark...
      • I am glad you like it. Since I am on my maternity leave now, I guess I can do something before my due date, only 40 days to go. Ok, I will try to post 2 stories each day which contain useful slangs or idioms. Wish you like them as well.
        • I do like it. I found somehow quite difficult to understand people's slangs here. I tried to get the meaning once I know it. Good summary! thx!
    • Good job!
    • should be "knock it off" not "knock it out"
      • Thanks. You are right. :)
    • Thanks for share. When you order breakfast...
waitress usually ask : - white or brown? - how do you want your eggs? 可选择sunny up (单面流黄),over easy(双面流黄), over hard(双面煎熟), scramble(炒鸡蛋)
      • Awsome. The first time I went to McDonald, I was totally confused by "sunny up". Luckily my BF(my hubby now) is with me. :)
      • It should be "sunny side up", not "sunny up"
        • Thanks, you are right. Sometimes I just say whatever I heard, but it maybe not the very wordJ. I asked my hubby and he said it should be”sunny side up”.
It reminded me of another idiom”you are the man”. I didn’t know the real words till last year. I was always saying”you’d man”.LOL
the man (the Man) :someone who has the ability over you大哥; 厉害的人
          "You're the man."
A: O.K. Your car is fixed. There should be no more problem now. A: 好了! B: You've got it taken care of just like that? You're the man.
      • Yeah, maybe just like "Long time no see".:)
        • I thought "Long time no see" is authentic English..
          • FYI. As I know, I guess not. To be exact, it should be called Pidgin English(洋泾浜英语), and now it’s called “Chinglish”. .
本文发表在 rolia.net 枫下论坛“Long time no see” was first mentioned in the book written by an American guy called William Hunter who was one of the foreign people mastering Chinese in the early 19th century.
(zt)Long time no see is often attributed as a good example of Chinglish being used by native English speakers. The phrase is said to have originated from 好耐冇見(啦)(Cantonese)/好久不見(了)(Mandarin). These Chinglish phrases were used by dock workers to greet sailors from overseas.
It began in early 1900's when British and American warships and trading ships often stayed at Chinese docks, and through pidgin communications with dock workers, started to communicate in what is now known as Chinglish. The sailors used the phrase long time no see as a joke when they got home and somehow the phrase became widely used even in English-speaking countries. A more grammatically correct phrase of English should be I haven't seen you for ages.
While this story is substantiated by other sources [1], this may just be a myth as there are no known records of the origin. The phrase has also been said to originate from trade with American Indians. Similar seemingly grammatically "incorrect" phrases (such as "no pain, no gain" or "the more, the merrier") are common and native to English; thus "long time no see" may have been just a coincidence.
"Chinglish" is also used to describe the broken Chinese interspersed with English used by westernized Chinese (e.g. American born Chinese) who are no longer fluent in their parents' language and must use English words to supplement their limited Chinese vocabulary.
        • first time heard this is when I was at a park gate in Vancouver as tourist, The first feeling is the gate keeper is tissing me? wired English gramma.
    • yeah, baby, yeah. shake it, baby!
    • good job, wish more to come
    • 上来就PULL OVER!
      • hehe, sorry, I should write "bravo"!:)
    • Acutally "I was ripped off." can also means
      • ppl always say "I was robbed ---我被卖主给骗了"
        • I guess both are acceptable. But my friends say"I was rippled off" more often :)
    • job well done. Thanks for sharing.
    • One more *_^ : Good good study, day day up!!
      • hehe, :)
    • well done
    • Well done! Thanks.
      • thanks*^*
      • en. that is new for me. good work!
    • Once sb. talk to me, " You could pass for Korea." She meant that I looked like Korea.
      • Thanks:) It's really new to me.
    • One more. When you say sth. is "on the tip of your tougue", you mean you really know the thing, but cannot remember the name.
    • baker's dozen = 13
      • Yeh, you said it. :)
a hidden drawback or disadvantage
Free food? It sounds too good to be true. What's the catch?
That new car is very cheap; there must be a catch in it somewhere!
That question looks easy, but there's a catch in it.
      本文发表在 rolia.net 枫下论坛--What’s up? = What’s happening?=What’s new? 或“Nothing new!”

我 都是说not much. 还有可以说same old same old.

      --Give me a ring = Call me!

      还可以说give me a shout.

--Have a crush on someone.
I have a thing for someone. I have a thing for downtown. :)

      --Skeleton in the closet.
我记得是这么说的 :don't laundry your dirty clothes in the public.

--Don’t get on my nerve!
就是piss me off.

--I am so fed up.
I had it enough.

      --Let’s get a bite. = Let’s go eat.
比如说去吃点东西,买杯咖啡,打个盹,都用这个词.grab a bite, grab a cup of coffee, grab a nap. ...

      --I don’t get the picture. =I don’t understand.
I don't get it.

-mess around (with)瞎混;Get to work. Don’t mess around.

      --She is such a brown-nose/boot-licker.

      精疲力尽就是burn me out
说某人垫了个鼻子,作了整胸手术,就是这样说.she got her nose job done. she got her boobs job done.
她怀孕了三次,网上有人留言就是这样写的:she was knocked up three times.
说这个人跳槽了可以说jump around 或者move on. move on这个词特别好,当你和别人分手了以后,就可以用i moved on.
比如说说我好看多了:i am way prettier.说我好多了.i am way better.
      说某人多管闲事,就是butt in other people's businesses
说一件事大出意料之外就是blow away, 比如说you blow me away.
我曾经跟我的老板谈话的时候用过这个词:i need someone to cover up my lunch time.
      说编:make out这个和lie,cheating不一样.
      说这个人是老光棍,或者老单身汉,就是he is a die-hard banchelor.
说她已经有男朋友了就是:she is taken. or she is not available.she is attached.
      说你别着急:don't be panic.
说我明天第一件事就是干什么什么就说i will do something first thing tomorrow/Monday morning.
I am something.
I have second thoughts.
说我昨晚睡得比较晚,就说:i had a late night.有一次我这么说,人家跟我开玩笑说:do you have late night or early morning?
      说我不是故意的:i don't mean that.
说这个人特别会读书就是book smart和它对应的就是street smart那个carpenter节目里donald trump就经常问那些哈福的人:are you book smart or street smart?

      取消:cancel/call off
      还有两个,我翻译不好,让高手来翻译以下,我只会用:i am all over you.
      i am all for you.
全搞定了就说:you are all set. 然后人家就说you are all set.
或者和谁在约会,表示还没有男女朋友的时候:what is you next crush? who are you working on?

      说不是一个圈子的就是这么说out of one's league
这个intelligent和smart不一样,smart,记得前面说过的吗,可以是book smart or street smart, while intelligent means你是well educated.
      突然之间:all of a sudden
      说某人的综合条件特别好:he has a whole package.

还有一个特别酷: you do want you are.千万别说成了you are what you do.这句话可以引申:you are what you eat.

-She is such a brown-nose/boot-licker.
精疲力尽就是burn me out , --àor worn out ,pooped. etc。
--à once my hubby introduced me to one of his buddies who hadn’t seen each other for ages, he said” hey, dude, it’s my girl 含笑。I know he’s teasing.
说某人多管闲事,就是butt in other people's businesses --à或者说nosy 也成
还有两个,我翻译不好,让高手来翻译以下,我只会用:i am all over you. I have a crush on you.
        i am all for you.
