IO: Please show me your passport and hukoubu.
M: OK.(护照和户口簿塞进柜台上的小口,她在电脑上记录着什么)
IO: Do you have a copy?
M: Yes.
IO: And your education certificates?
M: (我把四本证书拿出来,可是有一个太大,塞不进去)Should I take the certificate out?
IO: No. (我把能塞进去的,都塞进去了)
IO: Have you had any professional training?
M: Yes. I received one month’s full-time training in editing in 1997. This is the training certificate and its translation. (把培训证书以及复印件和翻译件塞了进去) And I had about two months’ part-time training in 2001. ( 说了一些有关培训内容方面的话) This is the certificate issued by our publishing house.
IO: What’s this?
M: That’s the professional training certificate I got after the one-month full-time training.
IO: What are your main duties as an editor?
M: (这个问题我准备过) I think there are mainly three duties. Firstly, I solicit contributions from authors and evaluate their suitability for publication. And I also select titles from foreign book catalogues available, search the Internet for new titles and decide whether or not they are worth publishing in China. Secondly, I read and correct solicited manuscripts and the translations. Thirdly, I participate in cover and layout design of the books. I put forth certain requirements on the artistic design of the books and the designers do as required. Of course, I also work together with the marketing and sales departments in preparing promotional materials.
IO: Do you have any proof of your editing work?
M: I bring with me some books and tapes I edited.
IO: Show them, please.
IO: Where is your name?
IO: Have you written anything?
M: I wrote a small book for children.
IO: Do you have it now?
M: Sorry, I did not take it with me. But I translated some books. Do you want to see any? I translated a book from Chinese into English. It was published last year by a Hong Kong press.
IO: Yes, please.
M: My name is here.
IO: I want to see your non-criminal …
IO: All right. Have you done any research about job … in Canada?
M: Yes. I often visit websites like monster.ca, jobbank, worklogic. I have actually printed a few pages. Would you like to see them?
IO: No.
M: (看见她在忙着输入什么,我就接着说了)I know there are a lot of publishing houses in Toronto and some of them offer job openings on their website. They also recruit by posting ads on some professional job websites. And some employers prefer to refer to their employees to recommend. I believe my friends in Toronto would be of some help to me. Actually, my friend in Toronto has written me a letter and offered to help me settle down in Toronto.
IO: …funds...?
M: Yes, I have a certificate of deposit issued by Bank of China.
IO: Do you speak English?
LD: Yes.
IO: You are a teacher?
LD: No. I am a sales at a foreign company.
IO: But your passport says you are a teacher.
LD: I started to work in the company in ….
IO: …meet the requirements... medical examination…right of landing fee… Do you take medical examination in Hong Kong?
M: Yes.
IO: …within 60 days... Pack up your things and leave the booth.
