On Christmas Day, 2002, Mel Bruni beat his wife Carmela to death. He struck her more than 20 times in the head with a weapon. On December 1, 2004 a jury found him guilty of only manslaughter.
This case is especially disturbing because it is not unique. Last fall, a high profile femicide in Montreal involving a former professional football player, Tommy Kane, ended similarly. Kane was charged with second degree murder, after killing his wife, but pleaded guilty to manslaughter at the beginning of the trial.
