that's a pain. However, strictly speaking, "美国网上购物商店都不算税,为什么加拿大都直接上税。" is not 100% true...

本文发表在 rolia.net 枫下论坛For the US, the general rule is that you need to pay sale tax for online shopping if the vendor physically located in the state the good is shipped to. (The strict legal words may be slightly different but the general idea is like this.) For example, you will need to pay tax for purchase from Amazon.com if the goods is shipped to Kansas, Kentucky, New York, North Dakota, or Washington states. But, since US has so many states, most of the times, the vendor is outside your state and therefore you don't need to pay tax.

For Canada, no matter what, you will need to pay GST. And if the vendor's province has HST (like NS, NB and NL), you will have to pay the full HST amount no matter where you are in Canada. For PST though, the idea is similar to that of the US (US does not have federal sale tax like GST anyway). For example, I once bought some thing online from a vendor located in BC (I am in Ontario) and I didn't need to pay any PST. But, since we only have few provinces and the online businesses are concentrated in only few of them (most probably in ON), you will have a very big chance to pay PST.

        • Last time I bought something from BC, I didn't pay PST for sure. But that was several years ago, don't know if things changed .... :)
      • depend on shipping address, out of the store state will be no charge for us tax
