Nannies are individuals who have chosen a career as a primary caregiver to children. These caregivers have varying degrees of training and experience. These candidates may have Canadian Early Childhood Education Degrees, British National Nursery Exam Board (NNEB training) or teaching degrees from their country of origin. The duties of professional nannies include all aspects of the children’s needs i.e.: meeting all physical and emotional needs of the children, providing stimulating and educational activities, preparing children’s meals, children’s laundry and keeping children’s rooms and play areas tidy.
Professional Nannies are available on a live in and live out basis. A fifty hour work week is typical. Salaries vary depending upon the Nanny's education, experience and hours of work. Salaries today range from $1200 to $1600 net per month for a live in nanny in the Metro Toronto area. Live out Nannies earn salaries of $400.00 net per week and up. Nannies who are required to drive command higher salaries. It is the employers’ responsibility to remit all payroll taxes. Please note that these are salary recommendations for the Metropolitan Toronto area and do vary across Canada depending on minimum wage guidelines for each province.
NANNY / HOUSEKEEPERS
The individual who fills this position usually has been working as a domestic helper in another country. She has come to Canada under an immigration program called "live in caregiver". She has been sponsored by a family to work as a caregiver and must live in with a family for two years prior to being eligible for landed immigrant status. If she decides to change employers, or for some reason, her employer no longer wishes to retain her, she must seek other employment. She is required to commit to a one year contract that is renewable for periods of 12 months. It is our experience that nannies who are treated with respect and dignity and who feel that they are an integral part of the family tend to be loyal to their employers.
The duties of a nanny / housekeeper include general housekeeping, laundry and cooking, but childcare must be her primary focus. Nanny / housekeepers are available on a live in or live out basis. Nanny / Housekeepers salaries vary depending upon experience and training. Diamond Personnel will assist you in determining a fair wage for your prospective nanny / housekeeper.
COMPANIONS AND HEALTH CARE AIDES
These individuals have chosen a career as a primary caregiver to the elderly or disabled. Most applicants have several years of experience working with the elderly and have completed specialized geriatric training. The duties vary depending upon the level of care required. Most consider housekeeping and meal preparation a part of their job. As these positions are often quite challenging, we do not recommend that the caregiver work more than five days per week. If necessary, weekend relief is arranged.
Companions earn on average $300.00 net per week on a live in basis. Live out salaries begin at $400.00 per week. It is difficult to define the hours of work of a live in companion, as many clients require 24-hour care. If the position becomes too demanding for one caregiver, our staff may suggest a shift arrangement. Every case is assessed on an individual basis.
