Hey guys, today I wanna talk about two phrases that I heard and I thought they are kinda interesting to share with you. Both of them are about jobs:

1. not my cup of tea
I forwarded a job opportunity to one of my colleagues. She replied:" Thanks Teresa for letting me know about the opportunity, but it's not my cup of tea", meaning it's not something that interests me
and I'm not very good at it.

2. the ball is in your court
A recruiter called me about an opportunity and I went to meet her over lunch time today (this is one of the bonuses of working in downtown, everything is closeby:-), i love it). I then discussed it with
one of my friends at work. I said:" I told the recruiter that I'm happy with where I am now, but I would keep my options open for any good opportunities. My friend said:" oh well, the ball is in your
court, so just wait for the perfect one.", meaning I'm in a winning situation or it's working towards my benefits.

    • IMO, "The ball is in your court" means "it's your turn". There's no connotation that you're winning or you have any advantage. It often implies that you're obliged to make a move and can't "just wait for the perfect one". -wincity(toad); 2009-12-16 (#5753290@0)

        • He probably used it the wrong way. Never heard it used this way. Always means "it's your turn". Often implies that "it's your problem now" and "you have to do something". -wincity(toad); 2009-12-17 (#5754121@0)
