If your landlord terminates your lease and demands that you move out, this is called an eviction. You can be evicted because you did not pay your rent or often pay it late you or your guests have damaged the building or your behaviour has disturbed other tenants the landlord or an immediate member of the landlord's family wants to live in the unit .You cannot be evicted because you have visitors or a pet (unless it disturbs other tenants). In order to evict you, your landlord must give you a Notice to Terminate a Tenancy. In general, you will be given 60 days to move out.
If you receive this notice and do not agree with it, you should get legal advice. Our section on Legal Information and Human Rights explains how to find a lawyer or, if you have a low income, legal aid. A lawyer or community legal clinic can help you to fight the notice by submitting an appeal to the Ontario Rental Housing Tribunal. This appeal must be submitted within five days after you receive the eviction notice.
