When the price is your life, are you still going to say "I Love u"?

Watched the movie "A Thousand words" last night, can not keep it out of mind. When the price is your life, are you still going to say I love u?
Jack (Eddie Murphy) got cursed and connected to a Boddhi tree in his backyard with 1000 leaves. With every word he says, a leaf falls off the tree. When the tree runs out of leaves, the tree will die and so will Jack. Even words that Jack writes count. Also anything that happens to the tree will affect Jack. When the tree is axed, poisoned, it applies to Jack.

Jack's wife did not beleive this and took Jack's sudden silence due to him not loving her anymore. His wife tried to make it up and meet Jack in hotel, and asked Jack to say I love you. Jack did not say because the price is his life.

If you were Jack, are you going to say "I love you" when the price is your life?
