some thoughts

1. For a 5 year old kid, after attending school in Edmonton, he/she will be fluent in English in one year, probably reluctant to speak Chinese even at home.

2. Most likely no Chinese weekend school there, ask Edmonton public school board for information, they should know if any. refer to http://www.epsb.edmonton.ab.ca/index.shtml.
.
3. If you find a Chinese school for him/her, probably just 2-3 hours per week, won't make any significant difference, I doubt even you move to Van or Tor.

4. What you can do is to homeschool your kid one or two hours every day with Chinese language material, in other words, really up to you to teach your kid Chinese. do it yourself.

    我将带一个5岁的孩子下月24日到埃德蒙顿,我想知道在埃德蒙顿市区有什么好的中英双语学校,我不想让孩子忘了中国话。

      • there are 4 mandarine-english bilangaul school in edmonton. I am from Edmonton.
the bilangual system, which also include other languages at different schools, compose of half a day of english and half a day of the languish of your choice. Usually, these schools are very academic oriented. There are also after school activities for their students and parents, such as chinese folk dance, painting etc. The schools are designated for different region of the cities and there are yellow school bus to help transportation. If you are out of the region(catching area), you have to provide your own transportation. The chinese-english bilangual schools are in high demand, and started from kindergarden to grade 6. after that, they can also take mandarine as a second language (instead of French) from grade 7 to grade 12. There is also mandarine (as a credit course) in University. Registration from the upcoming school year begins around Feb. of each year. To sign up for class after school started is also possible but only if there are vacancies.
