Jabber's English Note

Persistence pays off

A music radio station in my region encourages the audience to call their 1-800 phone number. If you are one of the persons who dialed in within some specific time frame, you will be elligible for some giveaways. One guy dialed that number 21 times within a week and finally got a set of Lord of Rings DVD. The program host told the story and said: "Persistence pays off".

We need to learn a lot of idioms in English. Take the "pay off" as an example. Most of us know it, and can understand it as we hear it. But it is another thing to use it in our communications. I have ever heard a gentelman encourage your people this way: "Remember: Your hard work will pay off, sooner or later."

    • 找工作也是如此.
      • 我觉得jabber的意思是说,走自己的路,让别人去说吧。
        • Sorry, you have misunderstood me.
"Pay off" means "get rewarded, or get compensated". Some people worked very hard, but they have not reached their goal. In such a case, their efforts have not yet paid off.
          • Thanks anyway. I misunderstood you deliberately. :)
    • good. thanks. long long long time no see.
      • keep this in secret
        he's here this morning......

        • I think
You meant some other guy posted some insulting messages in this forum using the following nicknames: "jaber, jabbeer, jabber0, Jabber". Not only you, but also other people have been fooled.

            Have a great weekends!
            • That's me. Before that, there were some insulting messages by other people, which can easily be mistaken as me.
    • Great note. Thank you.
    • After rested for about one year, Mr Jabber posted his another note. I remember in his previous posts he indicated that he had the possibility to be laid off and his wife just got pregnant. What is the condition now?
