Jabber's English Note

Again, I wan to use the music radio station in our region as an example. Everyday, it has some free giveaways: concert tickets, CDs, DVDs, and cash. Whenever the program host tries to solicit phone calls, he says: " Please be tempted to call us." This is a typical expression we cannot easily find an easy Chinese translation.

Translation does help us in the language learning. But I have to say we should try to observe how natibve English speakers use the language and follow their examples.

I know some friends are sponsoring a ROLIA New Year party. If you want to invite some others, you may try to write something like "Please be tempted to book earlier, because we have limited space and food."

    • Thanks jabber for those little cool wonderful notes, they are really helpful. But in my humble opinion, the one you heard from the radio must be "attempt"
i.e. please be attempted to call us. Again, please be attempted to book your seats as earlier as possible...

There are some similar words like that one, such as, "assorted" not "sorted" When you go to Subway, you can order assorted with white bun. They will repeat as "sorted"? Have a try one day, if they are native english speaking person, I am sure you could notice that... It is hard for us to catch the "A", it actually is not our listening problem, but they eat it when they say it. Again it's sort of cultrure thing...

One more word is "appartment", it is "AP PARTMENT", but a lot of people could not get the "AP", especially those who came into Canada way long ago, that is why they say ”柏文“,otherwise they should say "阿柏文“...
      just for fun...
