false or wrong?

In the recent sniper shooting case in the USA, one guy in Fairfax county was arrested by the police because he provided false information for the police. It is false information, not wrong information.

If you provide law enforcement officers with some information whcih turns out to be wrong, you will be fine. If you provide false information to mislead law enforcement officer, however, you are going to be in trouble.

It is wrong? or Is it false?
The usages of words really depends upon the context.
