Although the title sounds familiar, I don't really know which one that is. Maybe I've heard it somewhere but I didn't know the title...

本文发表在 rolia.net 枫下论坛I began to listen to western music back in 1985. I was really excited because at that time those Chinese songs weren't that great so the western songs dominated me at that time. I tracked the Billboard all the time. Into the 90's, the Chinese songs were really catching up while at the same time I found out that the western songs were not all that great (there are great ones, but certainly not all) so I stopped tracking the Billboard. After I came here 6 years ago, I hear less and less music, don't know what's popular anymore, just sometimes listen to the music while driving. I tend to think that this is because of the age - man in different age care about different things. (More on this later.)

The first time I heard Sarah's song you mentioned was when I was driving and I was so impressed. At that time, I didn't know what the title was, whose song it was. And you know those music stations, they don't always say what they are broadcasting. So I had to wait for another chance when the host bother to mention the song's title and singer. Eventually I bought the album with that song and realized that I also heard other songs on the album. Those songs are great too but not great enough for me to buy the album. My wife didn't like the album as I do, saying that there must be something wrong with the singer. I somewhat agree with her, because when you listen to those songs individualy, they are all good songs. But putting them together, you are likely getting into some kind of depressing mood.

Back to the age topic. I have a very good friend in my university who is now in Germany. He was a big soccer fan at that time. By saying "big soccer fan" I mean, well, there was seldom any people surpass him. I remember that before 90's worldcup, the TV was reviewing those goals in 86's one. And here's the amazing part: he can remember the result of all the matches, and not only that, he can remember how individual goal was done! For all the matches! He even kept a note book recording all the information regarding the worldcup, things like who belongs to which team in which world cup, etc. Several years ago I met him again in China. I asked him whether he went to see those German soccer games, or still kept on recording things on his note book. I was a bit suppised when he gave me no to both questions. I realized that it's the same thing - the age. Men in different age do/care about different things ...更多精彩文章及讨论,请光临枫下论坛 rolia.net

Are you alone? Where are you now?

    ---In a cold hotel room.

A cold hotel room always implies lonelyness and being far away from the family. If you likes to listen country music and pop music, you may hear it in the lyrics of the following two songs: 1) I am already there (Lonestar); and 2) In the arms of an angel(Sarah McLaughlin).
    • Never heard the first one but I like the 2nd one very much.
      • Nice to know that you like Sarah McLaughlin's song. Have you heard "We are in heaven" by DJ Sammy?
"We are in heaven" has many versions. That one with a slow rythm is very touching.

本文发表在 rolia.net 枫下论坛I have heard "In the arms of an angel" numerous times. Just like you, I did not know its title for a long time. But I was deeply moved by its serenity. One day, I drove on my way home. A lady called our regional music radio station and said she wanted to dedicate a song to her father-in-law because he passed away one week ago. The host said "I would like to play "In the arms of angel" and may your father-in-law find some comfort in the arms of an angel". I got a deeper impression on this song by this incidence.

Just like you, I am aging. It is hard for me to get crazy about something. Recently, I spend sometime listening popular music. My basic motivation is to understand the lyrics of those songs. Of course, it is by no means an easy job, because I even have difficulties in understanding the lyrics of some popular Chinese songs. But I find I have been making progress. By the way, I do that because I want to find something to do so that I can delay my aging to some extent. One year ago, I did not know that Cher is a female and that Dixie Chicks is a trio of three ladies.更多精彩文章及讨论,请光临枫下论坛 rolia.net
    • But is this related to Enlighs? I think you also could post something beside English notes.
      • Nice to talk you. The language is intertwined with culture, so I always talk about some contexts instead of those grammatical rules.
        • Can u speak Chinese now? I guess you forgot Chinese at all. :)
    • why not use "in a cold basement room"? Maybe they never live in basement.
      • You kidding. May you move out of the present basement soon.
    • I like to listen some English songs, but it is hard to understand all the lyrics. If it is possible to write down some, please share them with us. THanks
      • Try this:
      • You can get lyrics by using google.com. Come in, please.
For example, you may search Celine Dion's lyrics by entering "Celine Dion Lyrics". Better try to understand the lyrics as much as you can before seeking the whole lyrics from google.com.
