Jabber's English Note

What is a coward? What is cowardice?

On September 11, 2001, USA was attacked by terrorist. On the evening of that day, George W. Bush said on TV broadcating: "Today, freedon has been attacked by faceless cowards." Later, he called terrorist's attack cowardice. The cowardice is the behavior of cowards.

For some Chinese people, it is difficult to agree that terrorists are cowards. We Chinese think that cowards are those guys who are not courageous. Since terrorists used their lives to attack USA, we feel confused by the word "coward". Because of culture difference, however, the word "coward" has different meanings from what we think about.

Terrorist attacks are called cowardice because they aimed at civilian targets and innocent people. Similarly, Japanese's attacks on Pearl Harber was called cowardice because Japanese did not declare a war before take actions. But we usually think of cowards as those who are afraid of death.

    • This is a good topic. I believe Mr. Bush is the right one who could be called a cowards because he had hidden himself underground just after the attack. I respect the fire fighters and vice president at that time.
    • in this context, coward means "not play with the rule"
      • Exactly.
