If we watch CNN News, we may see the titles that read "Countdown Uraq" or "Showdown with Iraq".

It is quite natural for us to understand "Countdown". Bush has well prepared to invade Iraq. He is just waiting for a good time.

If anybody don't know "showdown", please don't do simple quess work. This word means a final, decisive confrontation between two opponents.
As the Chinese Communist Party defeated the Nationalist Party, there were three big battles. These battles were very decisive, and both parties maneuvered the resources they could obtain. Hence, we can call these battles a showdown.

Another example is the NBA playoff. I don't know anything about NBA, so
I won't expand my illustration on this topic.

In summary, a showdown means a decisive confrontation or contest.
