Jabber's English Note---rotten

I have been making mistakes. My Chinese co-workers make some mistakes, too.

By thinking about other people's mistakes, however, I have learnt a lot. One day, one of my colleagues trashed her bananas, saying "it's too ripe." Obviously, what she said is Chinglish. We Chinese guys can understand it but people from other countries may get confused. I mused about this matter for some time. I thought it is fine to say that these bananas are rotten and I don't wanna eat them. Recently, I thought of this matter again and get my guess work confirmed from my 8-year-old.

Yes, if the banana has ripened to the extent that you don't want to eat them any more, they are rotten.

Let's try to express ourselves correctly.

    • could we say " the bananas are overripe?"
      • We Chinese guys can create a lot of things that are grammatically correct.
But the language is not simply a set of grammar rules. So we had better observe how the English is used by others.
    • 提点不同意见: 1. 可以说too ripe或overripe 2. too ripe和overripe的水果是可以吃的, 也可以用来做banana bread 3. 但rotten和too ripe or overipe是不同的, 是不能吃的, 腐烂的变质的. 没有ripe的也可以rotten...仅供参考
