Jabber's English Note---an old timer

In Chinese, we often say somebody is our "old friend" or "old colleage" or "old classmate". If we talk in Engflish, we should be careful with these concepts.

The safest way to express similar ideas is to say "old timer". For instance, we may say "Bingle" is an old timer at rolia's forum. If your former classmates come to see you, you may have an old timers's party.
When I buy my house, I sent an email to my former classmates: "My house is a tiny one, but it can seat all the old timers".

I some sense, I can be counted as an old timer at this forum.

    • thank you, old timer. -------a newcomer

      嘿 嘿, 对 不 起, 老 兄, 跑 题 了。:)
      • Now, please allow me to introduce Mr. Hearts, an old timer at Sailor's forum. Mr. Hearts came to Canada when he was still young, maybe at his fifties. ....
        Your comments remind me of one of my old timers. He came from Sichuan. When he was in the university, he would say "Chui(2) Zi(4)" in Sichuan dialect. "ChuiZi" has two meanings in Sichuan: 1) a hammer in English, 2) cock, dick, or penis in medical terms in English. After some time, we dubbed him Hammer. This guy accepted this nickname. But his English pronunciation has strong Sichuan accent, so Hammer sounded like "Ha-ma" in Mandarin. As time went on, we callled this fellow Ha-ma, which means a toad if we put it in English. Before us old timers, his wife call him "Ha-Ma", too.

        In summary, my old timer's nickname evolved as follows:

        ChuiZi-->Hammer--Ha-Ma.
        • 终 于 明 白 为 啥 恐 龙 的 伴 侣 是 青 蛙 了, 原 来 是HA-MA 变 的。。:DD
    • very helpful hint, and is there any tricks in using"BUY"in your sentence " when I buy my house" instead of "BOUGHT"
      • Should be "bought". Thank you.
    • It is only one of many ways to say old friend. Either in Canada or the U.S "old friend, old colleagUe or old classmate'' are more commonly used. Did you mean " In some sense"?
      • you are right. I usually say "one of my former classmates".
        • I knew that you didn't really mean it . You just wanted to add one more expression to ''old friend''.
