It should be "the way in which acient...". However, "in which" is omitted here. Have you heard "the way it works is..."? Same reason.

Agree with you. 提高语法的有效途径其实是多阅读。读多了，语感就有了。就象中文一样，英文不少地方也是无法用语法规则所能解释的清楚的。
