It should not have anything to do with chinese or not. I had similar situation when I closed the house. The morgage representative was a Canadian lady. very nice but tough to negotiate. One reason the representative was tough may have something to do with how the bank is running. He/she may not have much to compromise anyway. The best way is to bargain with a lot of banks and then chose the best offer. If any miscommunication happened, try to solve it with the manager of the representatives.

For mortgage: a pre-approved LETTER is very neccesary, which print out the rate, and effective period....and a signature, all should be black & white. If it is not a standard, you should ask where is the PRINTED message of all his promises. If it is a standard contract, which means all items are in some printed pampletes, you should better keep one copy.
Protect yourself, before you sign anything.....and bear in your mind, every employee must be loyal to his/her employer, that is the basic rule when you run your own business and hire someone
